The Story Behind the Name |
The Lansdowne Portrait was named in honor of the original recipient of the masterpiece, the Marquis of Lansdowne. In 1796, Senator and Mrs. William Bingham of Pennsylvania gave the painting to the Marquis of Lansdowne, William Petty, as a gift. This gift gave thanks to the Marquis for supporting the American cause during the Revolutionary War, financially and emotionally, all the way from England.(8) Now, the place where he lived is called Somerset County, England, which is the same county where Bath is located. Since the portrait was created for the Marquis of Lansdowne, it inherited its name from him. This gift would continue on to stand the test of time and increase in importance throughout the years, causing it to travel across countries and oceans.
